Salvation Army reaches fundraising goal despite economy

ITHACA — The slowing economy didn't keep at least one service agency from meeting its key Christmas-season fundraising goal.

The Ithaca Salvation Army reached its $75,000 goal in its Christmas-season Red Kettle campaign, the organization announced. “We raised $77,323. We are so thankful to the many volunteer bell ringers who braved the cold and sacrificed their time to help the many families we serve,” said Major Carl Ruthberg, director of the Ithaca Salvation Army. The money is used for Christmas assistance and to help families and individuals throughout the year, according to Ruthberg. In 2008, the local Army helped more than 6,000 households.

Great Rivers United Way Reaches 80% of Fundraising Goal

As 2008 comes to a close, the Great Rivers United Way is inching closer to their fundraising goal but they still donations. Officials with United Way say they set their most agressive goal ever this year, hoping to raise two million dollars.

The goal was set so high because officials say the United Way's services are in more demand now than ever because of the economy. Even with the tough economy the organization has met 80 percent of their goal, but they still need the community to reach that last 20 percent of their goal.

The Federal Elections Commission has imposed $65,500 in fines on seven people involved in a former Republican fundraiser's scheme to funnel illegal contributions to President Bush's re-election campaign.

Tom Noe was convicted of making $45,000 in illegal contributions to Bush's 2004 campaign. He served a 27-month federal prison sentence and was fined $136,200.

Firefighter museum trying to step up fundraising efforts

A group seeking to honor Tennessee's firefighters and educate on fire safety has hit a funding snag. The Tennessee Firefighters Museum was planned as a two-story, 30,000 square foot building with a wall of honor paying tribute to fallen Tennessee firefighters.
Visitors would be able to check out equipment firefighters use daily, like hoses and trucks, through interactive exhibits.

But a rough economy has put the project on hold. Supporters aren't giving up the fight.
"We're going to start a couple of fundraisers in the spring, and we're going to be asking all the firefighters across the state-- there's 531 fire department across the state--and we're going to give each one of them the opportunity to be a part of and help fund the museum," TN Firefighters Museum President Bill Warwick .

A University organization broke fundraising records Sunday, raising more than $360,000 for children afflicted with HIV/AIDS.

For the hundreds of members of UGA HEROs who volunteered at the fifth annual HERO Olympics on Sunday, it was a day to remember all of the progress they have made this year. Torrance Memorial Medical Center is bringing in a heavy hitter, philanthropist and businesswoman Melanie Lundquist, to chair the hospital's ambitious $200 million capital campaign.

Lundquist and her husband, developer Richard Lundquist, also announced this weekend they are donating $13 million to establish the Lundquist Cardiovascular Institute and help fund the expansion of the hospital's emergency department.

"I consider this an investment in our future," Melanie Lundquist said in an interview. "We absolutely need every hospital in our area to succeed."

She will chair the larger capital campaign for a new seven-

story hospital tower and other improvement projects. Hospital officials hope to break ground on the 400-bed tower in 2010.

A Buies Creek woman believes she has been the target of a phone scam, but closer examination of the charity on the other end of the line shows the answer is not so simple.

Mary "Brownie" Johnson said she received a phone call from a charity called the Police Protective Fund (PPF), operating out of Charlotte, asking for a pledge.

"I pledged a $20 contribution because I believe in efforts for protective service because according to the U.S. Constitution the government must protect our citizens and our government," Ms. Johnson said.

Ms. Johnson said she later became concerned and contacted the Harnett County Sheriff's Office where an employee there said she didn't know anything about the Police Protective Fund.

Ms. Johnson said the information worried her. When the organization called back to confirm her pledge she withdrew her support.

Fundraising effort for Youth Science Institute falls $225,000 short of goal

The campaign to save the Youth Science Institute wraps up in less than two weeks, with YSI reporting donations totaling $72,000 as of Nov. 24 — far short of its fundraising goal.

"We know that to keep operating we need $300,000," YSI executive director Susanne Mulcahy said. "We've looked at lots and lots of different options, but it's too early to tell what will happen. We need to know the results [of the campaign]."

The YSI Web site warns that if the money isn't raised, the program could "face closing forever."

NSPCC enlists staff in fundraising push

Zoey Wade, a sophomore at Northport High School, raised more than $16,000 last weekend for the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island through a "Big Bash" dinner-dance fundraiser held at the American Legion Hall in Northport. The event attracted more than 150 people.

"The Epilepsy Foundation has helped me so much. I wanted to give back to them," said Wade, 15, who was diagnosed with epilepsy four years ago. "My purpose is to raise awareness. It is much more common that people think."

Wade said the fundraising idea came to her in April when she visited Shea Stadium for Jack Lang Day, a celebration of the late Hall-of-Fame sportswriter whose grandson is affected by epilepsy. As with Wade's event, all funds benefited the Epilepsy Foundation.

FLOTATIONS and fundraising activity on London’s Alternative Investment Market has reached a four-year low, latest figures reveal.

The figures for Q3 of this year have been compiled by Deloitte, the business advisory firm.

In Q3 total fundraising on the AIM market was £826m, comprising £190m of new money and £637m of secondary fundraising.

This total is the lowest since the onset of the credit crunch in Q3 2007 and the lowest total quarterly fundraising for more than four years (Q1 2004: £820m).

During Q3 there were 23 new admissions (Q3 2007: 79) of which only 15 raised new money (Q3 2007: 59);

Fundraising tailed off significantly month by month as the quarter progressed, with just £13m of new money being raised on the market in the month of September, and £83m of secondary funds. The current market value of AIM stands at £61.5bn (June 30, 2008: £91.3bn).

Barack Obama’s transition team is sending out fundraising e-mails pegged to the president-elect’s economic policy proposals.

"Today and yesterday, President-elect Barack Obama announced key members of an economic team tasked with creating jobs, stabilizing the economy, and getting our country back on track," Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe said in a message to supporters this week. "Barack is bringing together some of the best minds in the country to make swift progress on the economic challenges we face."

“…Barack's economic team has already begun work on a recovery plan, and he'll provide progress updates in the coming weeks. He'll also provide their initial recommendations to the incoming Congress,” wrote Plouffe, telling supporters on the campaign’s massive e-mail list that their efforts would "be instrumental in generating support to pass legislation that puts America on the road to recovery."

The e-mail includes a link to Obama’s Monday announcement of his administration’s economic team and a donation button that takes supporters to the Obama-Biden Transition Project Web site, where they can contribute to the 501(c) 4 that is providing part of the funding for the transition.

Tyrone Hospital Development Council announces golf event and fund raising goal for 2008

About $428 million has been donated to the Our Students, Our Future campaign, set to end in June 2009. UA hopes to designate $250 million scholarships. So far, $175 million of that amount has been raised, with $75 million already supporting 265 student scholarships, according to a UA news release.

KC Rep exceeds fundraising goal

Kansas City Repertory Theatre has exceeded its fundraising goal of $7 million to pay for Copaken Stage construction costs and to build the theater company’s endowment.

The Rep reported last week that it had raised $7,312,000 in cash and pledges. That represents contributions by more than 1,000 individuals and organizations. More than 300 of those were first-time donors.

The nonprofit company announced in 2005 a capital campaign to raise $5 million to build Copaken Stage and add $2 million to the theater’s endowment, which currently totals about $10 million.

Part of the total comes from a $330,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation. To qualify, the Rep had to raise at least $520,000 by Sept. 30. The Rep surpassed that goal.

Copaken Stage occupies 12,860 square feet in the H&R Block headquarters building at 13th and Walnut. This season’s opening production, “Bad Dates,” closes today.

For those of you who have not stepped outside of Palmer Hall for a few months, there is a presidential primary campaign happening right now. One big aspect of any election campaign is fundraising, and right now Hillary Clinton is in the lead in terms of money. She raised $27 million in the third quarter of this year, far outpacing Barack Obama's $20 million.
Most of this money was probably raised legitimately, but a great deal of it seems to have been given fraudulently. Under current campaign finance regulations, individuals are allowed to contribute up to $2,300 per candidate per election. These regulations are well known, but there are still ways to get around them.

As a young banker, Chuck Lewis aspired financially to join the United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society with a $10,000 donation.

For people who cannot afford the $10,000 at one time, the society established grants, said Lewis, who serves as United Way’s campaign chairman this year. Through a stair step effort, a member pays $2,500 the first year with grants paying the remaining $7,500. The contributor doubles the donation each year until giving $10,000.

Penn announces $3.5B fundraising campaign

PHILADELPHIA — The University of Pennsylvania is undertaking its largest fundraising campaign - a $3.5 billion drive that moves the institution into the multibillion-dollar level with other Ivy League schools.

The campaign is well short of Stanford University's record $4.3 billion drive, but dwarfs Penn's previous formal campaign which brought in $1.5 billion and ended in 1994.

The money from the five-year campaign will help fund increased financial aid, 18 new professorships that bridge disciplines within the university and new buildings and green space.

"We are seizing this moment, Penn's moment, the kind of seminal moment that comes along only once in a century," Penn president Amy Gutmann told a large homecoming weekend crowd on Saturday night, flanked by blue "Making History" banners.

Gutmann said the university has already raised 43 percent of its goal during two years of quiet campaigning.

The announcement of the new drive comes a month after Penn said its endowment for fiscal 2007 had grown more than 20 percent, to $6.6 billion. The endowment had increased 21.2 percent in 2006.

Equestrian team hold fundraising event

It was truly a playground for horses last Saturday morning as the UNH

Equestrian team held a Schooling Jumper Show in the Mast Road dirt parking lot. The horses trotted and galloped around the dirt course before leaping over an array of multicolored jumps.

Competitors could win ribbons of yellow, red, blue, pink and green if they were able to harness the agility and power of their horse. They had to spring over seven jumps zigzagged across the course and sometimes also had to do so against the clock.

In the competition points were deducted for every jump bar that the horse knocked over and four more were taken if the horse refuses, in other words if the horse suddenly decided without consoling the rider that it didn't want to launch itself over the glorified fence piece.

Participants were happy with the set-up and over-all laid back atmosphere of the event. "The show was really put together well," said Mallory Thomas, taking Horsemanship and rode "Morning Man".

University Fundraising

Universities are looking more and more to the private sector for funding because state appropriations aren't keeping up with their budgets.

At Marshall, for example, the annual operating budget is around $270 million. The state provides less than a quarter of that, or about $64 million.

Marshall hopes to raise $10 million in private funding this year. Last year, the school's fundraising arm, the Marshall Foundation, acquired $6.5 million.

West Virginia University hopes to raise $45 million this year. Last year, the WVU Foundation raised a record $87 million.

WVU is already well on its way to this year's goal with last week's $25 million donation, the largest in the school's history.

Ron Area with the Marshall Foundation says individual donors usually account for the largest contributions.

While WVU and Marshall's fundraising goals seem lofty, they pale in comparison to some other schools. The University of Virginia hopes to raise $3 billion by 2011.

Initially, I only did this on the odd occasion. I soon found, however, that unless I planned ahead and booked a day to work from home, the space in the diary was filled. I didn't want to book the same day working from home every week as that might give the impression that I was working a four-day week. It would also have reduced my availability, if, for instance, I was always working from home on Wednesdays.

Working from home on a regular basis is unusual for someone at a senior level. I'm not sure why this is the case since directors more than most are judged not on the hours they put in, nor the number of meetings they attend, but on their effectiveness in managing the budget, hitting performance targets and influencing key figures in partner agencies.

The problem is we all have this Protestant work ethic instilled in us. Somehow we feel we must be showing others we are working hard - it's not good enough just to deliver.

'Trivia Challenge' fundraiser to aid palliative care service

Palliative care is anything but trivial to Keith Hare.

The chairman of next week's fourth annual fundraising "Trivia Challenge" for the local palliative care service lost two older brothers to cancer in the summer and fall of 2005.

"They were in and out of palliative care for most of the summer," he said.

His brothers Arthur, 59, and Lloyd, 55, both died while in the care of the palliative care service, said Keith, 43.

The service at what used to be St. Vincent de Paul Hospital allowed his brothers the privacy to receive family visits and provided important pain management, said Keith.

"They always had good things to say about the nurses up there."

Keith Hare wanted to "pay back" the service for the good it did his family, and not being in a position to donate much financially, he decided to give of his time instead.

Hare first volunteered in the organization of the trivia challenge last year, providing questions, and this year he took on the chairmanship of the event. Among his contributions will be a special category in this year's trivia challenge: "brothers," questions about famous brothers in homage to his own lost loved ones.

The trivia challenge takes place Wednesday, October 24, at Wall Street United Church starting at 7 p.m.

Proceeds will go to the Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Service at the Brockville General Hospital's Garden Street site.

New London — A fundraising effort to catch the person or persons accused of killing local business owner Jared Silva has gotten under way.
“Justice for Jared” tin cans have been passed at several business establishments throughout the city in an effort to entice those who have information on the slaying to come forward.

Silva, 46, owned Jared's Packy on Ocean Avenue. Sometime around 9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12, he was gunned down, the victim of an apparent armed robbery, police said.

Elaine Butler, a customer and friend of Silva's, started the campaign. Butler could not be reached for comment.

Butler was one of several hundred people who attended a vigil Tuesday to remember Silva and also send a message that the violence in the city has to stop.

A few blocks away from the vigil, another man, Vincent Jones, was gunned down by his brother-in-law in his Denison Avenue home.

Last weekend firefighters hit the streets and brought in 31,500 dollars, beating last year's record of 29,000 dollars. All of the proceeds go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and help send Montana children to summer camp.

Two years ago, John Eller of Roseville was on an exercise bike at the gym watching the ESPY awards on ESPN when he was inspired by the story of Jim MacLaren, who received the ESPY's Arthur Ashe Courage Award from presenter Oprah Winfrey.
In 1985, the 22-year-old MacLaren, a former 300-pound defensive end at Yale University, lost his left leg in a motorcycle accident yet eventually recovered to compete in the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii.
